A Winged Woman | Boulder Chorale

  • Atonement Lutheran Church 685 Inca Parkway Boulder, CO, 80303 United States (map)

With the tenure of Artistic Director Dr. Vicki Burrichter, the Boulder Chamber Chorale has become one of the finest choruses in Colorado. At over 40 members, the chorus has performed with many of the best orchestras in the area, and has been described as “stunning, “technically brilliant,” and “emotionally transcendent.” Our May concert is of work by and about women called “A Winged Woman.” The centerpiece is Gwyneth Walker’s six movement work for mezzo-soprano soloist (Lesley Watson), piano (Susan Olenwine) and chorus called A Heart in Hiding. The texts are by the American poet Emily Dickinson. Beginning with the early music of Hildegard of Bingen and Monteverdi’s Orfeo, the concert also showcases the work of two masters: Lilli Boulanger and Judith Weir. Boulanger was the first woman to win the prestigious Prix de Rome for composers, but died at only 24, leaving behind small masterpieces like the Hymne au soleil performed here. Judith Weir is a British composer of Jewish heritage, and her stylistic language is complex and surprising. Finally, we have a set of three pieces from Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile. These are familiar folk tunes like Te recuerdo Amanda (Victor Jara), Alfonsina y el mar (Mercedes Sosa), and Naranjitay (Jaime Torres). Join us for a beautiful afternoon of choral music celebrating women from around the world!
